We all know that God is a loving God. But we also have to understand that God is also a holy God and One that will judge sin.
Deuteronomy 32:4 (NIV) He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
The Bible is clear that the penalty of sin is spiritual death. But because God loves us, He has provided a way out, through Jesus Christ.
(Rom 6:23 NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
